| Hills Prescription Diet Feline S/D for the Nutritional Management of Pets with Struvite Related Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) FLUTD is a problem often involving the formation of mineral-based crystals and stones in your cat?s urinary tract that can cause a variety of painful symptoms, including obstruction. Struvite and oxalate are the two most common crystals that form in a cat?s urinary tract. Hills Prescription Diet Feline S/D was developed to provide nutritional management of cats with struvite-related FLUTD. Struvite crystals and stones form as a result of urine that is over-burdened with magnesium, ammonium and phosphorus as well as an alkaline urinary pH. Indications: Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) ? Struvite uroliths dissolution. Not recommended for: ? Kittens. ? Pregnant or lactating queens. ? First 1-2 weeks after surgery. ? Cats concurrently receiving urinary acidifiers. ? Feeding long term without monitoring acid-base status (because of urine acidifying properties). ? Cats with non-struvite uroliths . ? Cats with kidney disease, hypokalaemia, metabolic acidosis, heart failure or hypertension. Additional information: ? Monitor the urine throughout dissolution and control urinary tract infection, if present. Urinary pH will increase if infection with urease-producing bacteria is not eliminated. Urinary pH must be continuously acidic for successful dissolution. ? After initially feeding Feline s/d for 2-3 months, the recurrence of struvite-associated FLUTD can usually be prevented by feeding Hills Prescription Diet Feline c/d or Hills Feline w/d. If FLUTD should recur when only Hills Prescription Diet Feline c/d or Hills Prescription Diet Feline w/d is being fed, the food can be changed back to Hills Prescription Diet Feline s/d. However, long term feeding of Feline s/d is not recommended where Hills Prescription Diet Feline c/d is adequate to prevent recurrence. Other products to consider ? Following successful dissolution of struvite uroliths: Hills Prescription Diet Feline c/d. ? Following successful dissolution of struvite , if prone to being overweight: Hills Prescription Diet Feline w/d. ? To control oxalate uroliths: Hills Prescription Diet Feline x/d. ? To control urate or cystine uroliths: Hills Prescription Diet Feline k/d |
